CS2 Crosshair Testing Routine
Test one candidate crosshair against useful scenes, change one control, and keep a rollback copy.
Before You Start
Save your current share code from Settings > Crosshair/Scopes before replacing it. If the menu has changed since this guide was checked, find the crosshair preview and its share/export control in the current CS2 client. Write down your actual resolution and aspect ratio. A screenshot of another player's crosshair is not a substitute for seeing it on your own display.
A Five-Minute Comparison
- Minute 0: establish a baseline. Import one candidate or change one menu control. Capture the preview and keep the old code beside it. Do not change color, length, gap, and outline together.
- Minute 1: check center coverage. Hold an angle on a distant target in a practice session. If the center hides the target, shorten the bars or change the gap; if you lose the center, make it more visible. Repeat at a closer distance.
- Minute 2: check contrast. Aim across a bright surface, a dark corner, and a player model. If the reticle disappears in one scene, try another color or a restrained outline. Judge the real map, not only a menu preview.
- Minute 3: move and fire. Stop, fire single shots, strafe, stop again, then fire a short burst. Decide whether dynamic spread information helps you read inaccuracy or distracts you. A static crosshair does not indicate that a moving shot is accurate.
- Minute 4: repeat and save. Recheck the most difficult scene at your normal display settings. Keep the candidate only if it solves the symptom that made you change. Export your adjusted code and label it with the date and resolution.
Diagnose the Failure, Not the Player
| Symptom | First controlled change | Retest |
|---|---|---|
| Center covers a distant head | Shorter length or a different gap | Same angle and distance |
| Reticle blends into pale scenery | Color or outline | Pale and dark surfaces |
| Dot merges with the target | Dot off or reduced thickness | Close and long angles |
| Dynamic bars distract during a spray | Compare with a static style | Same movement and burst |
| Code imports but looks unfamiliar | Compare current menu values and saved screenshot | Actual resolution, not source image |
Valve's September 23 explanation says length and thickness are in pixels in the new system and rescale when resolution changes. That is why a pre-update numerical console recipe should not be assumed to reproduce the same appearance now.
Roll Back Cleanly
If the candidate fails, import the original saved code. If you cannot find it, use your screenshot or recorded menu values to reconstruct the old setup. Keep both the source code and your edited version, so you can tell a public snapshot from your personal setting later.
Start with the code directory, use the Workshop map for comparison, and read the 2026 update notes if an old preset feels unexpectedly different.
